Panel 2: Decolonizing the Quaker Peace Testimony

Panelists will dialogue about the peace testimony in light of colonialism. Topics will include repercussions of slavery and Indigenous land theft on Turtle Island (North America), imperialism in the Philippines, and Quaker approaches to peace in the occupied Palestinian territories. When Friends benefit from others’ use of force, what does equitable conflict resolution look like in practice? How can Friends live in solidarity with those being marginalized, and what repairs need to be made for the actions of past Friends?

Cristina J. Montiel: Professor Emeritus, Peace Psychology, at Ateneo de Manila University in the Philippines, Montiel is author of over 100 peer-reviewed articles on peace, politics, religion, and social psychology including, “Psychosocial disembodiment of sacred spaces in a religious siege” in Peace and Conflict: Journal of Peace Psychology.

Sa’ed Atshan: Professor of Peace and Conflict Studies at Swarthmore College, Atshan is author of Queer Palestine and the Empire of Critique and The Moral Triangle: Germans, Israelis, and Palestinians.

tom kunesh: Son of StandingRock lakota tribal member Louise Kelly, from Minnesota, kunesh attends Nashville Friends Meeting, & works on saving native places & history in Tennessee.

Trayce N. Peterson: From Philadelphia, PA, Peterson received her Master of Divinity from the Earlham School of Religion. She is the co-clerk of the Friends Committee on National Legislation Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Working Group and a member of the American Friends Service Committee Standing Nominating Committee and the Friends General Conference Spiritual Mentorship Advisory Committee.
