Jessica Kershner reviews Melanie Springer Mock’s book, Worthy: Finding Yourself in a World Expecting Someone Else (Herald Press, 2018) in QRT #135. In Worthy, Mock tells many personal stories illustrating the challenges and beauty of recognizing our value as human beings in God, particularly focusing on ways Christian women are socialized to try to gain value. Raised a Mennonite and having taught at George Fox University for years, Mock’s stories will relate to the experiences of many Friends women in the US. Her stories are often humorous and draw in the reader with vulnerability and honesty, as well as her courage to ask difficult questions about the concept of being “blessed” and the differences of value placed on different people based on race, gender, and other factors.
